Abstract

This study investigates the influence of Perceived Career Barriers (PCB) on Perceived Future Employability (PFE) among final-year university students. Specifically, it examines the relative effects of three PCB dimensions, social/interpersonal, attitudinal, and interactional barriers, while also considering demographic factors such as age and work or internship experience. A quantitative survey design was employed with 171 final-year students from “X” University in Bandung, Indonesia. Data were collected using the Career Barriers Inventory (Toyokawa & DeWald, 2020; α = .88) and the Perceived Future Employability Scale (Gunawan et al., 2019; α = .96). Multiple linear regression was applied to test the hypotheses. Results revealed that attitudinal barriers had a significant negative effect on PFE, whereas social/interpersonal and interactional barriers showed no significant effects. In addition, age and work or internship experience were found to significantly and positively predict PFE. These findings suggest that internal barriers, such as low motivation and reduced self-confidence, may hinder students’ perceptions of future employability more than external barriers. The study underscores the importance of interventions targeting psychological skills and self-development, as well as the provision of practical career-related experiences. Such efforts may strengthen students’ perceptions of employability and better prepare them for the transition from higher education to the labor market.
