Analysis of the Effectiveness of Using Asphaltic Plug Joint and Strip Seal Joint Expansion Joints on the Krian – Mojokerto Regency Border Road Section
Abstract
The Krian – Mojokerto Regency Border Road is a collector road that serves a high volume and heavy load of vehicles, including freight transport with axle loads exceeding 10 tons. This condition requires reliable bridges, particularly at the expansion joint sections that accommodate structural movements due to traffic loads and temperature changes. This study aims to analyze the effectiveness of using two types of expansion joints, namely Asphaltic Plug Joint and Strip Seal Joint, in terms of construction time, cost, and maintenance period. The method used is descriptive research by reviewing bridge maintenance data on the road section obtained from the East Java Provincial Public Works Agency.
The results show that the installation cost of Asphaltic Plug Joint is lower, IDR 2,170,500 per meter, compared to Strip Seal Joint at IDR 11,450,000 per meter. The installation time for Asphaltic Plug Joint is also shorter (7 hours) compared to Strip Seal Joint (15 hours). However, in terms of long-term maintenance, Strip Seal Joint is superior as it has a service life of up to 4 years with maintenance costs of IDR 36,930,500 over 5 years, while Asphaltic Plug Joint lasts only around 18 months with maintenance costs reaching IDR 109,010,100.
Thus, the selection of expansion joint type must consider the balance between initial cost and long-term maintenance. For roads with heavy traffic and loads, Strip Seal Joint is more recommended due to its durability and safety for road users.
