Arah Perkembangan Penanggulangan Abrasi Pulau Wamar Kabupaten Kepulauan Aru
Direction of Development of Abrasion Management on Wamar Island, Aru Islands Regency
Abstract
Wamar Island in the Aru Islands Regency, Maluku Province, is Indonesia's outermost island and plays a strategic role economically, socially, and defensively. However, the area faces a serious threat of coastal abrasion, causing damage to main roads, disrupting transportation access, and threatening coastal settlements and tourist areas. This study aims to formulate a technical plan for mitigating coastal abrasion on Wamar Island and to provide recommendations for future prevention strategies. The research method used a qualitative descriptive approach with case studies, complemented by field surveys, hydrodynamic analysis, and coastal protection structure modeling. The results indicate that integrated coastal protection for Wamar requires the construction of seawall revetments to protect residential areas and road infrastructure, the construction of submerged breakwaters to reduce wave energy, and the construction of groynes in areas affected by sand mining. This approach is considered effective in minimizing the rate of abrasion while maintaining the sustainability of the socio-economic functions of coastal communities. In addition to technical interventions, local community participation and support from regional policies are crucial in preventing further damage and maintaining the coastal ecosystem of Wamar Island.
