Abstract

Abstract

Body dissatisfaction is a psychological condition in which individuals feel that their bodies do not conform to ideal appearance standards and tend to hold negative evaluations of their own bodies. This research aims to examine the relationship between social media use intensity and body dissatisfaction, as well as to evaluate the role of self-objectification as a moderating variable. A correlational quantitative approach was employed, involving 357 emerging adult female participants in Surabaya who actively use social media. This research instrument comprised three scales: the social media use intensity scale, the body dissatisfaction, and the self-objectification. The data were analyzed using moderated regression analysis. The results indicated that while both social media use intensity and self-objectification were positively associated with body dissatisfaction. However, self-objectification did not moderate the relationship between the two variables. In other words, both variables independently contribute to the level of body dissatisfaction among emerging adult women.

Abstrak

Body dissatisfaction merupakan kondisi psikologis di mana individu merasa tubuhnya tidak sesuai dengan standar penampilan ideal dan cenderung memberikan penilaian negatif terhadap tubuhnya sendiri. Tujuan dari studi ini untuk mengkaji korelasi antara intensitas penggunaan media sosial dan body dissatisfaction, serta mengevaluasi peran objektifikasi diri sebagai variabel moderator. Pendekatan yang digunakan adalah kuantitatif korelasional, dengan melibatkan 357 partisipan wanita dewasa awal di Surabaya yang aktif menggunakan media sosial. Instrumen dalam studi ini mencakup tiga skala, yaitu skala intensitas penggunaan media sosial, body dissatisfaction, dan objektifikasi diri. Data dianalisis menggunakan teknik moderated regression analysis. Hasil penelitian memperlihatkan bahwa baik intensitas penggunaan media sosial maupun objektifikasi diri memiliki korelasi positif dengan body dissatisfaction. Namun demikian, objektifikasi diri tidak berperan sebagai moderator dalam hubungan tersebut. Dengan kata lain, kedua variabel ini secara independen berkontribusi terhadap tingkat body dissatisfaction pada perempuan dewasa awal.
