The importance of generator performance under load variation is essential to provide a robust energy system. This study analyzes the influence of load variation on the excitation system of the generator at the Siman Hydropower Plant (PLTA Siman), with a particular focus on the relationship between load current and excitation current as well as their impact on generator performance. The study is implemented by analysing load variation data in the generator and oversee the impact of the load variation to the excitacion of generator. The results indicate a correlation between these two parameters, although the relationship is not always linear. For Unit 1 in 2019, the recorded load current was 314 A with an excitation current of 289 A. In the following year, the load current decreased to 225 A, accompanied by a reduction in excitation current to 252 A. Several operating conditions show that variations in load current are followed by corresponding adjustments in excitation current; however, the magnitude of the response is not always proportional due to the effects of magnetization characteristics, voltage regulation, and load conditions. These findings demonstrate that the relationship between load current and excitation current is dynamic, emphasizing the need for careful monitoring to maintain generator stability and optimal performance.
