Abstract
This study aims to examine the relationship between social anxiety and self presentation among emerging adults who use second Instagram accounts. A quantitative approach with a correlational design was employed. The participants consisted of 109 individuals aged 18–25 years residing in Surabaya. Data were collected using a self presentation scale based on the theoretical framework of Yang and Brown (2015), which demonstrated a reliability coefficient of α = 0.952, and a social anxiety scale developed based on the concept proposed by Leary and Kowalski (1995) with a reliability coefficient of α = 0.853. Data analysis was conducted using simple regression analysis with the assistance of SPSS version 25. The results indicated a positive and significant relationship between social anxiety and self presentation (F = 60.505; p < 0.05; β = 0.601). Social anxiety contributed 36.1% to the variance in self presentation behavior. These findings suggest that higher levels of social anxiety are associated with a stronger tendency for individuals to engage in self presentation through second Instagram accounts as a safer space for self-expression with a more limited audience.
